When we look at a refrigerated counter, display case or cabinet, refrigeration is often the part we notice the least. For an equipment manufacturer, however, it is a key element in the performance, efficiency and overall integration of the final product.
A counter has different dimensions and operating conditions from a vertical cabinet. A display case adds its own requirements in terms of product presentation, airflow and available space. Even two pieces of equipment designed for the same foodservice environment may call for very different cooling solutions.
That is why defining the right refrigeration solution starts with understanding the application itself.
Why does the application matter?
Every piece of professional refrigeration equipment has to maintain the required temperature while operating within a specific physical and operational environment.
In a refrigerated counter, for example, space is often limited. The cooling system needs to fit into a compact structure while preserving the functionality of the working area and allowing practical installation and servicing.
A refrigerated display case introduces different considerations. Products need to remain visible and accessible, while temperature distribution and airflow must be carefully managed within the refrigerated area. Refrigeration therefore needs to work together with the overall design of the case rather than being treated as an independent component.
In a refrigerated cabinet, vertical geometry, loading patterns and the frequency of door openings can create another set of operating conditions. Cooling capacity, temperature distribution and system configuration all become part of the design equation.
These differences affect much more than cooling performance. They can influence production, installation, maintenance, energy consumption and ultimately the way the finished equipment performs in everyday use.
From standard configurations to tailored solutions
Defining the right solution involves much more than matching cooling capacity to internal volume. The equipment layout, operating conditions, installation environment and performance targets all contribute to determining the most appropriate approach.
In some projects, a standard plug-in or remote unit may already provide the right fit. Plug-in solutions can simplify integration by combining the main refrigeration components in a compact unit, while remote systems can offer greater flexibility when the installation or equipment layout requires a different configuration.
Other projects call for a higher degree of adaptation. An existing unit can be modified to meet specific requirements, or the refrigeration system can be developed around the equipment itself.
This is particularly relevant in OEM projects, where equipment manufacturers and refrigeration specialists can work together from the early design stages, combining their respective expertise to define dimensions, configuration, cooling performance and integration as part of the same development process.
The result is not a unit that the equipment has to accommodate, but a solution designed to become part of the final product, whether standard, adapted or fully tailored.
Efficiency is part of the design
A refrigeration solution also needs to deliver the required performance efficiently.
Correct sizing, effective heat exchange, accurate temperature control and refrigerant choice can all influence energy consumption throughout the operating life of the equipment.
For manufacturers, this contributes directly to the value of the finished product. Greater energy efficiency can translate into lower operating costs for the end user, while lower-impact refrigerants support the transition towards more responsible technologies.
Performance, efficiency and sustainability are increasingly part of the same engineering process.
A tailored approach to professional refrigeration
This is the approach behind TECO HORECA.
We work with manufacturers of counters, cabinets, display cases and other professional foodservice equipment, developing high professional cooling machines according to the characteristics of each project.
Our offer ranges from plug-n-play units and remote systems to tailored units and OEM developments, with the possibility of working alongside manufacturers from the early stages of design.
The goal is not simply to supply a product, but to develop a solution that integrates effectively into the finished equipment and delivers the required performance, efficiency and reliability.
Because counters, display cases and cabinets may all need refrigeration, but the way it becomes part of the product can be very different.
